Marsaxlokk – Typical Fishing Village

Posted on by
Marsaxlokk is a traditional fishing village located in the south-eastern part of Malta and its name comes from marsa, which means "port" and xlokk, which is the local name for south east.

Marsaxlokk is the main fishing village and probably the most picturesque seaside locality in Malta. It is common to see Fishing nets spread on the quay to dry in the sun and, quite often, sturdy fishermen can be seen mending these nets. These activities, together with the humble houses by the seaside, give the place charm and serenity. Marsaxlokk is memorable for the many decorative "eyed" boats, which are believed to protect the boats from the evil eye, called luzzus.

On Sundays a fish market is set to retail various species of fish freshly caught. The tourist influx to Marsaxlokk attracted hawkers and souvenir vendors as well.

On the northern side of Marsaxlokk is the hill of Tas-Silġ were an archaeological site containing remains of megalithic temples of the Tarxien phase was found in the area.

Marsaxlokk is about 35 minutes from Valletta by public bus
